CHALLENGES
An enterprise healthcare software solution provider supporting NHS GP practices needed a structured, governed process for onboarding third-party healthcare software companies. These organisations required integration with the provider’s clinical platform so GP practices could safely use their services for referrals, specialist pathways, and patient-support workflows. Many arrived with incomplete understanding of integration criteria, inconsistent technical readiness, and limited experience of healthcare compliance. This created risk around data reliability, workflow behaviour, and clinical safety. The challenge was to establish a predictable onboarding and testing pathway covering criteria assessment, technical questionnaires, test-environment access, integration testing, and formal witness tests, ensuring only safe and reliable integrations progressed towards live use in NHS primary care.
OUR APPROACH
We applied a structured integration and compliance model to govern how third-party solutions were assessed, onboarded, tested, and approved for use in NHS primary care. Our approach included:
Defining integration criteria so providers understood the technical, security, workflow, and clinical-safety requirements before integration activity began.
Issuing detailed integration questionnaires to assess solution behaviour, data flows, clinical use cases, and readiness against platform standards.
Provisioning controlled test environments enabling providers to build and validate integrations safely before live deployment.
Supporting integration testing to confirm data passed correctly, workflows behaved as expected, and faults were identified under realistic usage.
Conducting formal witness tests, requiring providers to demonstrate integrations end-to-end and provide evidence of reliability, safety, and compliance.
Approving or rejecting integrations against defined criteria, with clear remediation pathways where issues required resolution.
This established a governed and repeatable integration pathway that strengthened control around clinical safety while providing third-party providers with a clear route towards approved connectivity.

THE RESULTS
The enterprise healthcare software provider gained a structured integration and compliance process that strengthened safety, reliability, consistency, and delivery confidence:
Consistent onboarding process for third-party healthcare solutions integrating with the platform.
Clear compliance expectations, reducing ambiguity and improving provider readiness before technical work began.
Reliable integration behaviour, validated through controlled environments and formal witness testing.
Reduced integration failures, with issues identified and addressed before progressing towards go-live.
Greater confidence for NHS GP practices, supported by a governed and witnessed integration process.
A stable, predictable integration landscape, providing a controlled foundation for continued expansion of connected healthcare services.
